I started mixing at
the age of 15 and the year was 1993. I became interested
in mixing by just listening to the radio, B96, and listening
to "DJs" mix. I was intrigued by them and by
music in general. I wasn't to much of a music fan at the
time, but my brother and cousins loved New Wave, so that's
what I would hear all the time. I wanted to try something
new as I didn't have anything that would truly give me
an identity. So I decided to become a DJ. Easier said
than done. Finally, I decided to ask my parents to buy
me my first set of turntables so that I could start on
my journey of what they would say, the journey to the
attic. They believed that if they would buy me DJ equipment,
I would try it for a couple of months and then finally
it would go up to where all the other junk was, the attic.
But thankfully, they gave in and "Dj Do-Dat"
was born".
That summer, I practiced
nonstop, trying to improve and replicate my DJ idols.
My idol was none other than everyone's favorite, Bad Boy
Bill. I would listen to the radio, record his mixes, and
listen to them over and over again. I would wonder and
think about "how he did that". I wasn't aware
that there was something out there called a 4-Track. But
that turned out to the better for me because it forced
me to practice even harder, thinking that there was a
way to do that mix LIVE and I would attempt it. I started
off playing Deep House/House. I felt like playing House
wasn't really my style and it wouldn't really help me
in distinguishing myself from other DJs. Alternative/New
Wave is the music to where I turned, and it was the right
choice.
I started playing
Alternative and went on a search for hard to find 12"
vinyl. I went everywhere searching for Alternative remixes
of groups such as Erasure, New Order, Depeche Mode, and
others. I believe my first Alternative record was Warren
Rigg - Who are you gonna run to? which was a big hit when
it first came out. Little by little, and dollar after
dollar, I would build up my collection. Groups from Cetu
Javu, When in Rome, Hubert Kah, Peter Schilling, Book
of Love and others. I came to love Alternative and still
love it to this day.
I mixed at my first
"party" on December 4, 1994, it was in a basement
of some house only blocks away from where I lived. I was
nervous as this was a big step for me. I was overwhelmed
by all the Djs that were there, and all the people that
were there. Finally, it was my turn to play, and I think
I did pretty good. And I say, that's were I feel my DJ
career started.
I decided to make
mix tapes and decided to call the first one "Waves
from the Heart" Volume 1. My friends told me that
that's a name for a "Freestyle" mix. I didn't
care, so I put it out anyway. It was ok, no tricks, no
gadgets, but just a straight mix. To my surprise, the
tapes sold fast. So I continued to make more. I decided
to make Volume 2, which turned out to be the most popular
of the entire Alternative series. It came to be known
as the "Red Tape" and it was named "Alternative
Forever". I currently have 9 Alternative mixes, 3
Spanish Pop Mixes, 2 Classics Mixes, and 1 Club Mix that
I have released.
I played many house
parties back in the day, but some other notable places
where I've played included Tania's"Every Thursday
Night". Tropicana (Palladium), Furama Restaurant.
There are some more, but I can't recall them. These are
all pre 1996. After 1996, I decided to start playing Pop/Rock
en Español because of the changing scene. Some
of the notable locations that I have played included House
of Blues, Joe's Bar, Club P.M., and others. I have appeared
and mixed on 90.5 FM WCYC/WRTE and "Sabado de Reventon"
on 105.1FM when it was still on.
Along the way I have
met some great DJs, and developed some great friendships
with many of them. The DJs that I started with, Havoc,
Greedy, Fire. These three guys were at every house party,
daytime you could think of. I became/entered their little
group because they gave me an opportunity to play. Frankie
B., one of my best and closest friends. A great DJ that
I will always think of when I think of the old days, the
days of Tania's (Every Thursday Night). We were a great
team that always wanted to be the best, and we felt that
we were. Rick Guerrero, a DJ that inspired my style, the
way that I wanted to sound, the way I wanted to play.
I first heard Rick on the Alternative Network on 90.5
FM WCYC. He always played something a little different,
with a more eccentric style, with a little more "hype".
I always give credit to Rick for inspiring me to practice
a little more and to be a little more creative. Fernando
Celedon, the man that introduced me to the other world
of Alternative, the Alternative that you would never think
of playing. DJ Mighty, I met this kid when he was about
17, and I was 21 or so. He was just a short little guy,
but he turned out to be one of my best friends to this
very day. He's someone you can call, a true DJ. A DJ that
knows how to play just about everything you can think
of. Tell him to mix Merengue with Bachata, he'll do it
(lol, JK). But that's how good he is, another great DJ,
a great person. I've partnered with some of the best DJs
around, in Chicago. There's many more that I did not mention,
but you know if we've crossed paths and I give credit
to all of you too. Here's some to list a few: Havoc, Greed,
Fire, Frankie B., No Joke, Dj Mode, DJ Ryke, DJ Mighty,
Rick Guerrero, Fernando Celedon, Ritchie G. Outta Control
Oscar, Jesse and Eddie Perez, and Omar Perez. (As I think
of more, I will add them) But to all of you guys, I thank
you.
Promotions that I
have been apart of have included Wish Ent., X-Rated Ent.,
Alternative Network, Enlightment Entertainment, and now
run my own promotion, i.e. Music Entertainment.
It's been a long run
since the days of mixing Alternative and I am hoping to
return to the mixing world someday on a full time basis.
Look for new projects, new ideas, and new mixes from me.
See you around!
